Marjorie M. Johnston ~ Kasson, Minnesota

Monday, May 20th, 2013

Marjorie Marie Johnston, 91, of Kasson, Minnesota passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 17, 2013.

The memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 101 Sixth Avenue NW, Kasson, MN on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 10:00 am with Pastor Clint Patterson officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. There will be no reviewal.

Marjorie was born on December 13, 1921 near Hayfield Minnesota to Vernon and Jeannette (McEathron) Johnston. As a child Marjorie lived in Bureau County, Illinois and Hayfield and Wasioja, Minnesota. She graduated from Mantorville High School in 1940. Marjorie went on to attend “beauty” school in the Twin Cities and became a licensed cosmetologist in 1941.

As an adult, Marjorie settled in Kasson, Minnesota and was a very active member of the community. She was a successful business woman who worked as a hair stylist for over 43 years in the beauty shop she opened in Kasson in 1942 and sold in 1985. For decades, she was very generous with the time she devoted to the First Presbyterian Church of Kasson where she held numerous positions including treasurer, board member and Sunday School and confirmation class teacher. She loved her country and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 73 years. Marjorie was an avid reader who particularly enjoyed biographies and historical nonfiction about politics and religion. Marjorie’s greatest pleasure was time spent with family, especially participating in lively activities such as current events discussions, teasing and general “goofing around”.

She is survived by her brother Rhonald Johnston and his wife Dorothy; her sisters Jean Weinknecht, Donna Dutton and her husband Lowell (Ed), and Phyllis Bradford; and her sister-in-law Jean (Woodward) Johnston. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Dwaine, Robert and Vernon (John) Johnston and her sister Marcella (Johnston) Olive.

Marjorie’s nieces and nephews (and their children and grandchildren) were the pride and joy of her life. She was a beloved aunt who truly took great pleasure in spending time with children and teens. She is remembered for her pleasure in buying the girls pretty outfits and her enthusiasm for all types of outdoor activities including badminton, fishing, skating, sledding and baseball. She was the “go-to” person when an advocate was needed, and while she never minced words when pointing out someone’s faults, she also never failed to remind others of a person’s good qualities. The legacy of Marjorie’s generous spirit, passion for all types of play, love of reading and zest for life will live on through them.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the organization of the donor’s choice.
