Lyle “Papa” Gronvold ~ Kasson

Monday, February 20th, 2017

Lyle Orville Gronvold passed away on February 17, 2017 at the age of 80. Despite the many adversities he faced, Lyle remained courageous and strong until the very end. His final days were spent surrounded by family at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Lyle was born to Orville and Serena Gronvold on July 5, 1936 at their family farm house in rural Dodge County. As a young child, Lyle attended a one-room country school house near their farm. He later attended school in Byron, MN and eventually moved to Rochester where he graduated from Rochester Central School. At the young age of 15, he began working at Cascade Animal Hospital where he learned to care for both large and small animals. He spent over 50 years at Cascade Animal Hospital. After retiring, he continued to work part-time at Heritage Pet Hospital. Lyle also served his country for 15 years as a member of the Army Reserves.

Lyle married Nancy Bradford on November 30, 1956. Together, they eventually settled in Kasson, MN where they raised their 2 daughters, Rebecca and Lisa. Through 60 years of marriage, Lyle and Nancy shared many ups and downs but always found time to wash and dry the dishes together every night. Over those 60 years, they also witnessed the births and adoptions of 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Nothing brought more joy to Lyle’s life than getting a hold of a little one or chasing a toddler around. His unique nicknames and unorthodox displays of affection will always be cherished.

Lyle was a very avid fisherman and hunter. He had several coonhounds and always had a special fondness for all the family dogs. In the summers, he and Nancy enjoyed taking their camper and boat to various lakes in Minnesota with friends, Philip and Roberta Bradford. Lyle also had an interest in following professional, college and local sports teams; especially his grandkids’ teams.

Above all, Lyle will be remembered for his larger-than-life character. His actions were caring and selfless. His words were colorful and witty. His mannerisms were rigid and fidgety. His spirit was feisty and energetic. His sweet tooth was unmatched and his stories were legendary. From the rabid skunk to the freezer full of cats; from Ruth Ann Cook to Shaky McAdams; from the monkey in a jar to the old, stiff walleye…the legend of Grundy will live on forever.

Lyle is survived by his wife Nancy (Bradford) Gronvold, 2 daughters, 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Children and grandchildren include: Rebecca & Dennis Zachary (Jessica, David, Lucas, Kathryn, Serena, Michael, Jacob, Julian, Olivia) of Indianola, IA and Gary & Lisa Dorschner (Curt, DeJay, Meghan) of Kasson, MN. Also surviving are 2 sisters, Marie Parker and Lorna Schilling. Lyle was preceded in death by his father Orville Gronvold; mother Serena (Olson) Gronvold; and sister Arlene Norman.

Visitation will take place from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 22nd at the First Congregational Church in Mantorville, MN. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 23rd at the First Congregational Church in Mantorville, MN with Pastor Brian Egelston officiating. A private burial for immediate family members will occur at Evergreen Cemetery in Mantorville, MN following the funeral service. Memorials will be distributed by the family to the American Heart Association and Alzheimer’s research.
