Joyce Ann Boyum ~ Rural Kasson

Tuesday, December 5th, 2017

Joyce Ann Boyum, 82, formerly of rural Kasson, MN passed away Monday, December 4, 2017 at Shorewood Reflections, Rochester, MN. She was born February 3, 1935 to Irvin & Paulina (Lena) Unke. Joyce grew up in Fairmont, MN, graduated from Fairmont High School, then from Mankato State University with a degree in Elementary Education and pursued a career as a teacher. She was proud of her teaching career and would say that teaching was the “greatest love of her life.”

Joyce married Syvert N. Boyum on June 19, 1960. She also worked side-by-side with Syvert on the dairy farm until he passed away in 1998.

Joyce is survived by daughter Ann M. Abel of Phoenix, AZ; sons S. Eric Boyum of Parker, CO and Aaron Boyum of Kasson, MN; grandchildren Andrew (Drew), Kendal, Paige, Kellen, and Kaisa; sister, Eunice Bulfer; and brothers Willis, Wayne, and Roland Unke. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Robert, Leo and Ronald; and her infant daughter Angela.

While Joyce Ann loved her job as a teacher, she would put this on hold after the birth of each of her kids. As her kids grew a bit older, she would always return to teaching. In 1989, at the age of 55, she accepted a full-time teaching position at Triton Elementary School and remained there until her retirement in 2001.

Syvert and Joyce Ann attended South Zumbro Lutheran Church regularly. Syvert sang in the choir and Joyce was the choir director for many years. Joyce could also sing. She had a soaring, soprano voice with an operatic vibrato. She could make the church bell resonate with the sound of her voice.

The funeral service for Joyce will be at 11:00 am on Monday, December 11, 2017 at South Zumbro Lutheran Church, 4839 – 120th Ave SW, Kasson with Pastor Eldon Simonson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. There will be no reviewal. Burial will be at the South Zumbro Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorials be directed to the family. These funds will be used for charitable purposes that include research and care for those suffering from Alzheimer’s dementia.
